First Edition, Signed by the author. # 508 of 1000. Laurel Brigade. photos, maps, roster, 188 pp. Nearly 1500 men from ten counties in the Shenandoah Valley served in the 12th; they were organized in the summer of 1962 from the ranks of Ashby’s Cavalry. At the Battle of Brandy Station a bold charge by the 12th helped to thwart a Yankee attempt to destroy Stuart’s cavalry corps. The regiment participated in the Beefsteak Raid and fought in over 100 engagements. Fine in DJ.

Chew’s battery was developed by Turner Ashby in 1861, proving indispensable to Jackson in the Valley; Shoemaker’s was under John Pelham’s Stuart Horse Artillery; the Newtown Artillery was formed of men from the Winchester area and was also assigned to Pelham, both units serving as the very nucleus for the Stuart Horse Artillery.
